Council Approve Flusco Wood Caravan Park Expansion Three Years After Application First Submitted

Westmorland and Furness Council have in the past week given approval to a planning application first submitted to Eden Council in August 2021 seeking planning permission to expand Flusco Wood Caravan site using a small area of land to enable an additional 21 caravans on the site.

Dacre Parish Council lodged objections to the development in 2021 stating “The additional lodges along with the existing site will dwarf the Newbiggin community of 90 households.” The parish council also said “‘Creep’ of holiday accommodation into the open countryside will have the potential to impact the wider Eden area.” Statement the parish council reiterated in 2022 on a re-consultation of the application by the former Eden Council.

In 2023 the parish council following a further re-consultation comments were received in November 2023 stating that Dacre Parish Council ”have no comments or objections”.

Members of the public also submitted four objection letters including concerns over the loss of trees and changes to the local landscape and visual impacts.

Planners responded to the concerns saying “Albeit the proposal seeks to expand the existing tourism site into the open countryside, it is considered that the proposed extension would be read in association with the existing built form present on site and would not cause such an adverse impact to warrant the refusal of this application. The introduction of the landscaping scheme would help soften and assimilate the development. As such, it is not considered that this proposal would create an adverse impact on the landscape or amenity of the area.”

Like a number of other planning application, it has remained in planning limbo since 2023 awaiting a planning decision from Westmorland and Furness Council that the council issued on the 2nd October 2024 three years after it was first submitted to Eden District Council.

Westmorland and Furness Council planning officers this week told councillors at a planning meeting held in Voreda House that planning officers were working to reduce the number of outstanding applications that are still awaiting a planning decision including others submitted also to the Former Eden District Council still also awaiting a planning decision.
