Community Radio Secures Protection for Coronation Gardens After Town Council Failed to Act

Coronation Gardens in Penrith has once again been listed as an Asset of Community Value after action was taken by the town’s community radio station following concerns raised by local residents.

Earlier this year the community asset protection for Coronation Gardens lapsed after the registration was not renewed after the town council failed to renew the nomination. As a result, the gardens were removed from the register of Assets of Community Value in January.

The loss of the status prompted concern among members of the local community about the future protection of the gardens, as a valued public green space within the town.

Following these concerns, volunteers at the local community radio station Cumbrian Local Radio, previously known as Eden FM, took steps to address the issue. With support from the team at Penrith.Town News, the station submitted the required nomination paperwork to Westmorland and Furness Council seeking to have Coronation Gardens re-registered as an Asset of Community Value to give it the protection from potential sale or disposal without the community having the opportunity to secure it.

Westmorland and Furness Council has now confirmed that the nomination has been considered and approved with Coronation Gardens now been successfully re-listed on the council’s register of Assets of Community Value and will retain this status for a further five years.

Cumbrian Local Radio is one of the few organisations in Penrith outside of the town council that is eligible to submit community asset nominations to the council. Volunteers at the station worked to complete and submit the necessary documentation in order to help safeguard the gardens as an asset valued by the local community.

The situation also raised wider concerns about the protection of other important community buildings in the town. The current community asset registrations for Penrith Town Hall and the Penrith Museum and Tourist Information Centre are due to expire in April.

Penrith.Town News was pleased to support Cumbrian Local Radio and members of the local community during the nomination process, helping to ensure that Coronation Gardens continues to receive the protections afforded to assets recognised as having significant value to the community.
