Campbell-Savours Condemns PM for Using Palestinian Statehood as ‘Bargaining Chip’ while acts of Genocide are committed

Penrith and Solway MP Markus Campbell-Savours has spoken out against the government over the ongoing genocide in Gaza. The Penrith MP said it’s difficult not to feel angry that the Prime Minister using statehood of Palestine as a bargaining chip while genocide is committed.

He added that the UK government must act decisively not just make symbolic gestures.

He has called for a full suspension of military and intelligence support to Israel. A boycott of Israeli goods. An international coalition to control the flow of aid into Palestine and immediate recognition of Palestine as a sovereign state.

Markus Campbell-Savours, MP said “Over the past year I have seen the growing outrage over the Israeli government's actions towards Palestinians in Gaza. Harrowing images flood social media and television: maimed and starving civilians, parents mourning their dead children, communities clawing through rubble. My constituents are rightly furious and demand action.”

“This frustration echoes in Parliament. For months, statements and urgent questions about the Middle East have drawn packed chambers, with MPs across party lines expressing rising outrage.”

“Yet asking these questions has been anything but easy. Members of smaller opposition parties are almost guaranteed a spot, while Labour MPs face stiff time constraints. Despite repeated attempts, I’ve only been called once to speak on this issue.”

“Many colleagues now share deep disappointment over the government’s tepid response.”

“What was once seen as a leftist cause now unites MPs across the political spectrum in demanding recognition of a Palestinian state — a position I’ve consistently held since protesting the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, and standing in solidarity with Palestine two decades ago.”

“It is therefore difficult not to feel angry that the Prime Minister, the leader of my party, continues to equivocate on Palestinian statehood. This is not a bargaining chip in negotiations. This is not a trade deal. This is a genocide.”

“Our attempts at constructive diplomacy have failed. We’ve not even managed to get food to the starving. The Likud-led coalition, propped up by extremists, has shown a disregard for human life that will leave a lasting stain on Israel’s history.”

“Our government must act decisively. Broad sanctions — not symbolic gestures. A full suspension of military and intelligence support. A boycott of Israeli goods. An international coalition to control the flow of aid. And immediate recognition of Palestine as a sovereign state, as pledged in the Labour Party manifesto and promised to those who elected me.”

UNRWA COMMISSIONER-GENERAL has spoken out and said the worst case scenario of famine is now happening in gaza in what the commissioner general said is an entirely man-made famine.

The threshold of famine has been reached with widespread starvation and malnutrition across the war-torn enclave including among children.

More than 100 people have died due to hunger in the past few weeks alone. The only way to reverse this catastrophe is to flood Gaza with a massive scale up of aid.

The United Nations including UNRWA have the expertise and resources available.

UNRWA alone has the equivalent of 6,000 trucks of food and medicine ready to cross into Gaza. He called on the international community to “Let us do our work without restrictions, in safety and dignity”.

This is Ahlam she is just 8months old and along with her family has been displaced 20 times since she was born. This means that at just 8 months old, Ahlam has already been displaced every 10 days on average. She was first screened for malnutrition on 16 June 2025 at an UNRWA medical in a school-turned-shelter in Gaza city.  Ahlam was diagnosed as suffering from Severe Acute Malnutrition. When she was seen again on 12 July 2025 at another UNRWA school-turned-shelter in Gaza city, Ahlam’s condition had worsened. She had since been displaced and was now living in a tent with five other family members. UNRWA health teams were able to provide her with therapeutic supplementary feeding and basic childcare. The family reported having no regular access to food, with only limited resources available. Multiple forced displacements only worsen Ahlam’s condition, making it more challenging for her to recover.

She is one of thousands of infants and children displaced in Gaza and suffering in the man made famine caused by the genocide taking place in Gaza due to the actions of the Israeli government.
