Cabinet Changes as Council AGM Marks Final Year of Current Council Term of Office

Members of Westmorland and Furness council are meeting in Kendal this afternoon (Thursday 7th May) for the council’s last annual general meeting of the current council term of office, that will see the councillors appoint a council chair and vice chair and changes to the council’s cabinet members at the start of the final year of the current administration.

Today’s meeting will see a reshuffle of the cabinet with Cllr Giles Archibald (Libdem) stepping down from his Cabinet post for Climate, Biodiversity and Environmental Services replaced by Cllr John Murray (Libdem) who has held the cabinet role for Transport and Regulatory Services.

Cllr Adrian Waite (Libdem) is a new appointment to the cabinet in its final year to take up the cabinet role for Environmental Services and Transport, covering Transport including Buses, Cycling, Active Travel, Public Rights of Way, Countryside Access, Street Scene, Waste and Recycling Services that includes the councils changes to household waste collection underway.

The council is also making changes to the membership of the Eden area planning committee with a Cllr Mike Eyles, long serving Penrith councillor who last month departed from the ruling Libdem group on the council and now sits as an independent councillor and has served as deputy chair of the planning committee and served on the former Eden District Council will be replaced by new comer to the council elected last year to the Eamont and Shap ward Cllr Nicki Vecqueray (Libdem).

All 65 Westmorland and Furness Council seats will be up for election in May 2027 along with town and parish councils and the election of Cumbria's First Mayor.
