Another Town Councillor and Former Deputy Mayor of Penrith Quits Town Council

Another of Penrith's former Deputy Mayor’s and Town Councillor has resigned as a town councillor just a month after another town councillor and former deputy mayor also resigned from the town councillor.

Former town councillor Hillary Snell resigned from the council this week having served as councillor for Penrith West ward on the town council since May 2019 and was re-elected for her second term in May 2023 elections as a Labour Councillor for Penrith West Ward with 172 votes.

Former Councillor Snell becomes the latest in a growing list of councillors to quit the Town Council since the May 2023 local elections.

A notice of vacancy has been posted by the town clerk with a period of 14 day that allows local registered voters in the Penrith West ward to call for a by election to fill the vacancy created. If a by election is called it will likely held in December and cost the Penrith tax payers in the region of £10,000 to hold with a by-election due to take place in November for the Penrith South Ward following another town councillor resignation last months.

If a election is not called by the electors in the ward the town council can opt to fill the vacant seat by co-option.

A spokesperson for Penrith Town Council said “Former Penrith West Ward Councillor, Hilary Snell has resigned. The Council would like to thank former Councillor Snell for her unpaid voluntary service on the Council.”
