Amber Weather Warning Covering Cumbria for Heavy Snow Fall over Weekend

The met office has issued an Amber Weather Warning covering most of Cumbria for Snow from 21:00 Saturday 4th January through until 23:59 Sunday 5th January along with two separate yellow weather warning for Ice and snow covering Cumbria and much of the North of England on Saturday and Sunday.

The Snow is expected to lead to disruption on Sunday across most of northern England.

The Met Office has said that some rural communities cut off and Power cuts and other services, such as mobile phone coverage could be affected.

The snow is also likely to lead to delays and cancellations to rail travel over the weekend and into Monday. Along with Travel delays on roads and the potential to see some stranding of vehicles and passengers.

Snow will reach the South of Cumbria later Saturday, then spread North across the rest of the county overnight and through Sunday morning. Snow will be persistent and heavy at times, and will likely drift in brisk easterly winds, especially over higher ground.

Much of the warning area can expect 3-7 cm of snow. Areas above about 150 m will likely see 15-30 cm, with 40 cm for ground above 300 m, before snow begins to ease and clear by the end of Sunday.

The UK Health Security Agency has also issued amber cold-health alerts for all of England, meaning a rise in deaths is likely - particularly among those aged 65 and over or with health conditions.

Overnight on Thursday temperatures plummeted with Shap one of the most affected, which hit a low of -7.4C according to the Met Office.
