National Highways have thanked drivers for their patience while they have carried out full overnight closures on the A66 last week to install new average speed cameras.
The cameras are now in place and operational between the M6 Junction 40 and Temple Sowerby and will remain in place until the A66 upgrade is complete.
National Higjways said the average speed cameras have been installed help keep both the travelling public and its workforce safe while construction continues.
The temporary 40mph speed limit is required because the temporary access points created along the section of the A66 are designed for safe use at 40mph.
If these accesses were designed for 60mph traffic, they would require a dedicated lane for safe use that would remove a running lane on the A66, which would mean delays to both local and strategic journeys. Building extra lanes to the north or south of the A66 isn't possible as both sides of the road will become work areas once main construction of the new dual carriageway starts.
During the speed camera installation works, the 40mph limit was extended to the Temple Sowerby bypass to allow for consistent and safe driving conditions through the works area, supporting the installation of temporary changes to the carriageway layout and site accesses.
A 30mph speed limit is also in place on the A686 along with temporary traffic lights to allow safe access to sites along the single carriageway section of the A66.
The measures all form part of the enabling works for the long awaited A66 Northern Trans‑Pennine (NTP) upgrade project to begin.
