A66 Closed to high sided and vulnerable vehicles due to strong winds

National Highways have closed the A66 in both directions between the M6 in Penrith, Cumbria and the A1M Scotch Corner in North Yorkshire to high sided and vulnerable vehicles due to strong winds over the Pennines.

The Met Office has issued a Yellow Weather warning for strong winds across the North Pennines for strong Westerly winds with gusts of 50-60mph over high ground.

The weather warning is in place between 11am and 6pm Today (Monday 30th December).

The road was also closed overnight to high sided vehicles as wind speeds hit 55mph and was reopened for a short time as wind speeds dropped but in now closed again to all high sided and vulnerable vehicles as wind speeds again increase over the North Pennines.

Road users wishing to travel across the Pennines are advised to plan ahead and consider alternate routes such as the A69.
