“It looks like a landfill site” reaction to Rubbish dumped at Penrith recycling centre.

A large amount of rubbish containing household waste in blue bin bags to dining room chair and even parts from a vehicle have been dumped in the Westmorland and Furness council operated recycling center located in Morrisons car park over the last 24hours.

Those using the recycling center this morning expressed shock and dismay at the amount of rubbish just dumped.

One member of the public doing her recycling this morning said “it looks like a landfill site”

Penrith recycling centres located across the town have faced issues in the past few years of non recycling materials dumped in what is legally classed as fly tipping.

Penrith made national headlines over the issue in 2021 as recycling centres were used by some to dump a range of household and commercial waste.

Calls were made for the former Eden District Council to install CCTV at the recycling centres to capture evidence to prosecute and stop the fly tipping.

Eden Council looked at the option but never implemented cctv.

In 2019 a recycling center on the A6 at Plumpton was closed by the council after repeat incidents of fly tipping and the associated lean up costs.

The Morrisons car park recycling center was until last year managed by Penrith Town Council who voted to end the management contract for the site.
