Busy Few Days for Police in Penrith with Shoplifting, Drink Driving and Drug Takers
Officers from Eden Neighbourhood Policing Team (NPT) have had a busy and productive few days in Penrith with arrests for shoplifting, drink driving, catching individuals in the act taking drugs in public spaces and vehicles with no insurance driving in the town.
On Thursday evening officers stopped a vehicle in Penrith on suspicion the driver was under the influence.
The driver was subsequently arrested for driving over the prescribed limit of alcohol with his vehicle also uplifted by police for having no insurance.
In a separate incident on Friday evening following concerns raised by members of the community about drug use issue in Penrith town centre, officers were on routine patrol Castle Park and came across the smell of cannabis coming from the direction of two males.
Both were stop searched under the misuse of drugs act legislation and police located cannabis on one of the males.
As this was this person's first time offence, police issued an out-of-court disposal — Community Resolution.
A Community Resolution is an informal method used by police to deal with low-level offences, allowing offenders to take responsibility without going through the formal criminal justice system. (it is not a get out of jail card and is recorded as a warning and this cannot be offered again- unless in exceptional circumstances. It can also show up on a enhanced DBS check. A crime is still recorded and the offender's details are recorded as such).
On Saturday officers received a 'shopwatch radio' shout from Boots chemist with a report of a female shoplift perfume from the store.
Officers caught up with the female and detained her for the shoplifting offences. Officers established that the female was well-known to police for shoplifting offences in Penrith.
The female was arrested under suspicion of shoplifting and she remains in police custody at this time.
Officers said they would like to thank “Boots, chemist and Sainsburys for the collaboration of the TWO shoplifting offences this female committed”.
The 'shopwatch radio' is a very system for shops to communicate quickly to police in order to prevent crime and disorder as well as catch criminal in at act.
